Week’s Review- Rafting the Pai River

Deep in the heart of the jungle bordering Myanmar and Thailand, the Pai River meanders through canyons filled with waterfalls and wildlife. At times the violent currents rushing against giant boulders create class-four rapids generating both excitement and fear, other times it allows it’s visitors a chance to float in it’s warm, calm murky water.

After hours of winding roads and praying that our breakfast wouldn’t escape in the backseat, we arrived. A roadside rafting center where we received helmets, life jackets and our six man raft. Our always cheerful guide, Thep got us in the vessel and we headed off. Hours of beautiful scenery, the deafening sounds of the jungle surrounding us and a relaxing river, left us smiling and laughing until our guts hurt.

Our jungle camp, made of platforms and mosquito nets, was a perfect ending to a beautiful day. It wasn’t all glamorous however. While eating under candle light, I felt an insect the size of a beer bottle crawl over my bare foot. Of course there were foot long millipedes, poisonous spiders and the ever present danger of snakes lurking in the darkness. The good stuff.

The next morning we all woke up refreshed and ready for rapids. A full day of rapid after rapid with a guide that loved throwing clients out of the boat on purpose. Of course, we always egged him on when the threat was aimed at someone not yourself. We ended near sunset and headed back to the beautiful, quirky town of Pai.

Rating out of ten: Nine. It would have been a ten if I would have brought beer.
Word to the wise: Bring beer and a waterproof camera.
